Job Description
Browning the Green Space (BGS) is seeking an experienced Program Manager to join our team. The Program Manager will support the development and delivery of a broad range of initiatives ranging from a small business bootcamp to a year round career development program for two- and four-year degree students in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In this role, you will be collaborating closely with a network of organizations to support the program participants, developing measurement and verification plans, preparing impact assessment reports, and executing other program management related tasks. The Program Manager will report to the Interim Managing Director.
This position is for a goal oriented, self-motivated, and outgoing "people" and “operations” person who is willing to roll up their sleeves to build out and operationalize new initiatives alongside a motivated and passionate team. The ideal candidate will create and maintain positive working relationships with program participants and partners, and be a self-starter committed to the vision, mission, and values of Browning the Green Space.
About Browning the Green Space
Browning the Green Space (BGS) was born from the realization that people of color often receive more than their fair share on “environmental bads” like brownfields, pollution, and asthma while they receive less than their fair share of “environmental goods” like cleantech jobs in energy efficiency, renewable energy, water, wasted food, and urban farming. We seek to facilitate a just energy transition by putting Black and Brown communities first, and enabling systems change at the intersection of social, environmental, and economic justice. We are a coalition of leaders and organizations powering a just energy transition in the Northeast by creating jobs, building wealth, and reducing energy burden in Black and Brown communities. By removing barriers and expanding access, we seek to close the racial wealth gap while combating climate change.
Our work falls into five connected but distinct focus areas:
- CAREERS - Providing Pathways to Employment
- COMPANIES - Removing Barriers to Employment
- CAPITAL - Supporting Entrepreneurs
- CONTRACTS - Supporting Contractors
- COMMUNITIES - Reducing Energy Burden
Key Responsibilities
- Support the design and development of a program implementation plan for our year-round clean energy career development program for two- and four-year degree students.
- Plan and execute online and in-person career development workshops and community building activities for two- and four-year degree students.
- Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of virtual meetings, workshops, and larger-scale events. This includes the creation of workshop and event agendas, event planning budgets, promotion and marketing, and presentations.
- Build out a mentorship program that supports participants across our career development program portfolio.
- Manage the implementation of our intern recruitment, placement, and retention services for the MassCEC Support Internship Program Success initiative, the Rhode Island Clean Energy Internship Program, and the VC Onramp Program.
- Engage in outreach and develop partnerships with clean energy employers, higher education institutions, community based organizations, and other ecosystem actors.
- Support and help manage year-round engagement with BGS coalition members through securing DEIJ workshop facilitators, execution of small peer-to-peer discussions, quarterly general body meetings, and focus area committees.
- Monitor progress and report on program metrics including conducting key administrative processes related to grant management.
- Provide key programmatic support for BGS initiatives across workforce development, business development, and community development on an as needed basis.
Skills (required)
- Passion for and commitment to BGS's mission to advance issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in clean energy and climate.
- Attention to detail
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Track record of end-to-end project execution
- Exceptional organizational skills including task prioritization and effective time management
- Ability to provide clarity and adapt to changing priorities
- Ability to self-motivate and get things done independently in a remote work environment
- Ability to vision, design, execute, and implement projects that advance a broader goal
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work with diverse interests and backgrounds
- Experience planning and facilitating stakeholder meetings to advance program goals
- Comfort and dexterity with navigating and learning how to use virtual platforms and tools to work and collaborate remotely (such as, Google Work Suite, Slack, Zoom)
Skills (desired)
- Familiarity with or direct experience with Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice concepts, issues, and policies.
- Familiarity with climate, renewable energy and energy efficiency programs, and small business or workforce development concepts.
- Experience with career advancement services, educational programming, or mentorship services.
We strongly encourage all candidates to apply if they are excited about the opportunity and are unsure if they meet all the skills criteria listed above. Applicants are not expected to possess all of the skills listed. We are looking for someone with a growth mindset and an overall commitment to the mission of the organization.
