Please describe the nature of the business or organization
Island Wind is a subsidiary of Vineyard Power Cooperative (which is a 501(c)12 nonprofit). As a community-owned cooperative, Vineyard Power aims to help build a sustainable energy future for Martha's Vineyard. With a growing membership base of over 1350 households & businesses, we aim to keep the benefits and control of our energy resources within our island community. Our mission, as a 21st century energy cooperative, is to produce electricity from local, renewable resources while advocating for and keeping the benefits within our island community. Our vision is to make the island of Martha’s Vineyard carbon neutral, in domestic electricity, transportation and home heating, by 2050. These goals will be accomplished through several commercial scale solar installations, an offshore wind farm, and the implementation of smart grid technology. Vineyard Power and Vineyard Wind signed the nation's first Community Benefit Agreement that recognized the competitive advantage of a commercial offshore wind developer partnering with a local community developer. We are currently developing a utility scale offshore wind project, called Vineyard Wind in federal waters 14 miles south of Martha's Vineyard. Vineyard Wind will be the first utility scale offshore wind project in the USA.
