MassCEC is helping organize the first Boston Cleanweb Hackathon on May 4-6 as covered in last week's Boston Business Journal.  The event was started by a clean energy entrepreneur in Silicon Valley last Fall, it expanded to NYC, and Boston is hoping to make its event the biggest yet as the rollout of Cleanweb Hackathons continues throughout the US, Canada, London and Paris.

Boston's leading clean energy investors and others are sponsoring the event including the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, Venrock, Black Coral Capital, Rockport Capital and Point Judith Capital.

"Cleanweb" is the simple idea of developing software solutions that solve energy problems.  The goal of the hackathon, in part, is to attract developers and others to the idea of solving big problems while developing web companies at the same time.   Sunil Paul, the entrepreneur who is promoting the idea, gave his most recent pitch at SXSW.   He uses local favorite, Zipcar, to support his case, among other companies.

Registration is now open.  Participants can register individually or in teams.  Teams can come with or without ideas.  EnergyHub fielded a team in NYC and created an App to help its own business (blog post).  Some companies are interested in participating or sponsoring the event (entry level is $500) to recruit talent. Industry experts will share problems that need solving if teams want ideas.

Datasets and APIs are posted on the website to plan ahead if teams are interested.

Buzz and media interest is high.  The Twitterverse is active at @cleanwebbos  for up to the minute news.

Winners and thousands in prizes will be awarded.

A pre-event kickoff will be held at the Venture Cafe at the Cambridge Innovation Center with the event located at Greentown Labs, a cleantech incubator.

Prominent entrepreneurs and leaders will judge the competition. Please join us on the 4th!
