MassCEC makes venture capital equity investments in promising early-stage Massachusetts clean energy companies that are developing and commercializing technologies that contribute to the advancement of one or more of the following clean energy or energy efficiency categories:

  • Solar photovoltaic
  • Solar thermal
  • Wind power
  • Geothermal
  • Wave and tidal energy
  • Advanced hydropower
  • Energy storage for automotive applications
  • Energy storage for grid applications
  • Biofuels, including ethanol, biodiesel and advanced biofuels
  • Renewable, biodegradable chemicals
  • Advanced thermal-to-energy conversion
  • Hydrogen
  • Carbon capture and sequestration
  • Energy monitoring
  • Green building materials
  • Energy-efficient lighting
  • Gasification and conversion to liquids fuels
  • Industrial energy efficiency
  • Demand-side management
  • Fuel cells

Technologies related to coal, oil, and natural gas, except where used in fuel cells or nuclear power, are not acceptable technologies for MassCEC funding.

 

MassCEC makes seed venture investments of up to $500,000. All investments are in the form of a suitable equity instrument, depending on the applicant’s circumstance.


MassCEC accepts applications on a rolling basis. Applicants must submit a comprehensive, written business plan via email with the subject header “Investments in the Advancement of Technology Program” to BizPlan@MassCEC.com.

  • A business plan should address the following key areas:
  • Team
  • Market
  • Value Proposition / Opportunity
  • Technology / Product
  • Competition
  • Financials, both historical (if applicable) and projected
  • Capitalization
  • Sources and Uses of Funds

Complete submissions will undergo an in-depth review.  Before making an investment decision, MassCEC’s investment team may perform additional due diligence, including in person meetings, technical and financial review, reference checks on all key team members and preparation of a detailed investment report. All investment decisions must be approved by the MassCEC Board of Directors.

 

Please Note: Grants and/or forgivable loans will not be granted as part of the Investments in the Advancement of Technology Program.
